细节题

A new study led by PhD candidate Ashley Kim and Professor James Nieh has found that artificial light is not only a health concern for humans, it also affects the sleep patterns of honeybees and poses a threat to their essential role as pollinators (传粉者).

“Our research shows just how sensitive honeybees are to changes in their environment, particularly to something as seemingly harmless as artificial light,” said. Kim of the study: “By disturbing their sleep patterns, we see clear evidence of reduced sleep periods. This raises significant concerns, not only for bee health but also for the health of ecosystems that depend on them for pollination.”

Honeybees generally prefer to nest in dark environments, although a small-amount of light can enter from the entrance. Sleeping bees typically remain immobile but exhibit certain movements if disturbed by nestmates.

Like us, when bees experience a poor night’s sleep, problems in behavior and function emerge. Sleep is crucial for the health and fitness of groups of bees since they depend on a complicated system of communication known as the “waggle dance” that informs nestmates about the location of food sources in the environment. Bees dance more poorly and therefore do not communicate as well if they do not get enough sleep.

Through a series of experiments, researchers compared groups of bees that underwent normal sleep in the dark with others that were subjected to continuous artificial light. The results clearly showed that prolonged (长期的) exposure to light significantly affected the sleep pattern of honeybees, leading to bad behaviors.

Among the details described in the paper, bees exposed to continuous light slept less and were more frequently disturbed by other bees compared to those kept in normal darkness. Also, bees exposed to continuous light exhibited a preference for darker areas within their experimental cages.

“Understanding the factors that affect bee health, such as light pollution, is essential for developing strategies to protect pollinator populations. With artificial light increasing, this research throws light on how such disturbances may be harming pollinators.” said Nieh.

What effect does artificial light have on bees?

["

Changing the color of bees.

","

Reducing the number of bees.

","

Making bees less sensitive.

","

Shortening bees’ sleep time.

"]
[["D"]]

根据第二段“By disturbing their sleep patterns, we see clear evidence of reduced sleep periods. (通过干扰他们的睡眠模式,我们看到了睡眠时间减少的明显证据。)”可知,人造光会缩短蜜蜂的睡眠时间。故选D。

What can we infer about bees from paragraph 4?

["

Sleep is no light matter for bees.

","

Bees dance to show the food amount.

","

It is easy for bees to have sleep problems.

","

Bees have the same sleep habits as humans.

"]
[["A"]]

根据第四段“Sleep is crucial for the health and fitness of groups of bees since they depend on a complicated system of communication known as the ‘waggle dance’ that informs nestmates about the location of food sources in the environment. Bees dance more poorly and therefore do not communicate as well if they do not get enough sleep. (睡眠对一群蜜蜂的健康和适应至关重要,因为它们依赖于一种被称为‘摇摆舞’的复杂交流系统,该系统将环境中食物来源的位置告知筑巢同伴。因此如果它们没有得到足够的睡眠,蜜蜂的舞蹈更差,它们就不能很好地交流。)”可知,睡眠对蜜蜂很重要。故选A。

What did researchers find in their experiments?

["

Long sleep leads to bees’ bad behavior.

","

Sleeping bees remain motionless completely.

","

Bees under continuous light like darker places.

","

Honeybees prefer to nest in bright environments.

"]
[["C"]]

根据倒数第二段“Also, bees exposed to continuous light exhibited a preference for darker areas within their experimental cages. (此外,暴露在持续光线下的蜜蜂表现出对实验笼中较暗区域的偏好。)”可知,研究人员在实验中发现,持续暴露在人造光下的蜜蜂喜欢较暗的地方。故选C。

What is mainly talked about in the text?

["

The variety of bees’ sleep pattern.

","

The factors that affect bees’ sleep.

","

The harm of artificial light on bees.

","

The link between pollinators and ecosystems.

"]
[["C"]]

根据第一段“A new study led by PhD candidate Ashley Kim and Professor James Nieh has found that artificial light is not only a health concern for humans, it also affects the sleep, patterns of honeybees and poses a threat to their essential role as pollinators (传粉者). (由博士候选人Ashley Kim和James Nieh教授领导的一项新研究发现,人造光不仅会影响人类的健康,还会影响蜜蜂的睡眠和模式,并对它们作为传粉者的重要作用构成威胁。)”以及文章主要讲述了人造光对蜜蜂睡眠模式的影响以及带来的危害可知,C选项“人造光对蜜蜂的危害”符合文章主旨。故选C。

Sometimes, it feels as if I have too much to do—other days, too little. Yet no matter the shape of my 9 to 5, one thing remains constant: emails. During my early years, I focused on eye-catching landscape photography. I spent time in the Himalayas, Patagonia and Tasmania and returned with pictures of breathtaking beauty which I thought were “awesome”. But a one-month camping trip to the Menindee lakes along Darling-Baaka in Australia shifted my perspective: Photography is more than taking photos. A new groundbreaking study reveals a landmark breakthrough in the field of snakebite treatment. Researchers, led by David Baker from the University of Washington, have designed new proteins—unlike any found in nature—that can inactivate some of the most poisonous components of snake bite toxins (毒素). In the heartland of Japan, where endless green rice fields paint the landscape like a living blanket, a remarkable form of artistry has emerged—rice paddy art, a practice that transforms ordinary farmland into colourful artworks. While children and adults alike are delighted by the surprisingly complex images, one might wonder: what makes the art a reality?
