The 20th-century futurists made some unbelievable predictions, but several predictions didn’t turn out to be that accurate. For example, some futurists believed that we can live to be 150 and pilot private planes from our homes. However, Marshall MeLuhan, a Canadian professor of English literature who became a pioneer of media studies, came closer than anyone to understanding our present technology-driven world.

In 1962, Professor McLuhan published a book called The Gutenberg Galaxy. In this book, he said that human history could be divided into four different chapters: the acoustic age, the literary age, the print age and the new electronic age. McLuhan said that the new electronic age would be the time when we live in a “global village”—a space where technology would share knowledge with everyone.

But Professor McLuhan was worried about what the Internet might be used for. He believed it was the way people received information that mattered just as much or even more than the actual information itself.

“Once our senses and nervous systems give way to the tech companies who would benefit by taking advantage of us, we don’t really have any rights left,” he said. McLuhan warned us that private manipulation (操纵) would narrow down the information we receive based on what marketers and advertisers choose for us to see.

These days, most of McLuhan’s “global village” is kept in private and limited spaces. Many search engine companies make it easier for us to find information but finally decide what information we may see and in which order. They record our private data within our searches to sell it to advertisers.

Targeted (针对性的) ads are flashed at us everywhere we go and cyber attacks happen every day. Of course, there are many measures we can use to protect our privacy. For example, we can use cloud-based services with better data protection services. But at the end of the day, we can’t help but wonder if these measures will actually do anything to truly keep our personal information and data safe.

They record our private data within our searches to sell it to advertisers.

What is the author’s attitude toward present measures that help us stay safe online?

Seventeen-year-old Abby Yoon is determined to help children lead healthier lives through proper nutrition and physical activity. In America, 14% of children do not get more than one meal a day, and many urban families live in food deserts, where the access to fresh food is limited. Yoon saw the need to address this issue and founded the Sustainable Hunger Initiative, focusing on providing healthy food and educating communities about nutrition. Some vacations take you to destinations that feel futuristic, while archaeological (考古的) tourism transports you to the past. The following programs worldwide will offer you a unique experience. There are times when murder is not committed because of cruelty. People may kill for other reasons such as anger, misunderstanding, and fear. Everyone has made mistakes because of such feeling. For society, it is a serious mistake to take the life of someone who has killed because it teaches everyone that forgiveness is unnecessary. Several years ago, I began asking my friends and family to tell me their passwords. I had come to believe that these tiny personalized codes get . Yes, I understand why passwords are universally hated: the strains they put on our memory, the endless demand to update them, their sheer number. I hate them too. But there is more to passwords than their annoyance. In the fact that we construct them so that we (and only we) will remember them, they take on secret lives. Many of our passwords are filled with suffering, mischief, sometimes even poetry. Often they have rich backstories. There was the former prisoner whose password includes what used to be his identification number (“a reminder not to go back”); the childless 45-year-old whose password is the name of the baby boy she lost (“my way of trying to keep him alive, I guess”). Sometimes the passwords were playful. Several people said they used incorrect for theirs so that when they forgot it, the software automatically gave them the right one (“your password is incorrect”). “Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo” is a real sentence. Before the age of the smartphone, photographers had to learn how to use high-tech cameras and photographic techniques. Today, with the huge range of camera apps on our smartphones, we’re all good amateur photographers, since the quality of smartphone images now nearly equals that of digital cameras.
